Chapter 8 - The Father's Shield

Leo didn't step fully into the room. He stood squarely in the doorway, his massive, powerfully built frame completely blocking the exit, entirely shielding little Maya, who was standing safely behind him in the bright hallway.

The intense, agonizing heartbreak that had haunted Leo for three years completely vanished. Staring at the monster who had tried to use their innocent toddler as a psychological weapon, his protective, paternal fury entirely overrode any lingering mercy.

"You don't get to speak about her," Leo rumbled. His incredibly deep voice was cold, flat, and vibrating with an absolute, lethal authority that made the temperature in the room plummet.

Carmela stood up from the velvet armchair, slowly walking toward the doorway. She believed she still held absolute power over his heart.

"You won't hurt me, Leo," Carmela taunted softly, stopping just a few feet away from the threshold, perfectly aware that she couldn't physically overpower him. "You're too soft. You proved that three years ago when you locked me in here instead of putting a bullet in my head. Let me see my daughter. Let me hold her, and maybe I won't tell her what a monster her father is."

It was a profound, catastrophic miscalculation.

Carmela fundamentally misunderstood the terrifying psychology of a protective father. Leo hadn't spared her life three years ago because he was weak; he had spared her because he wanted to preserve his daughter's innocence. But the absolute second Carmela tried to infect Maya's mind, she ceased to be a protected secret.
