Chapter 11 - LILY’S HEART

Lily required surgery.
The best pediatric cardiac surgeon in New York worked at Collins Memorial.
Madeline refused to use the hospital.
Arthur found another surgeon.
Dr. Sarah Collins—no relation—at St. Vincent’s.
The surgery carried risk.
Arthur asked to attend every meeting.
Madeline allowed him but retained final medical authority until legal paternity orders were entered.
Eleanor filed an emergency petition claiming Madeline was medically neglecting Lily by refusing Collins Memorial.
The petition backfired.
The court reviewed the history.
Independent experts confirmed St. Vincent’s care met standards.
The judge denied Eleanor standing and ordered her away from the children.
Lily underwent surgery.
Arthur waited beside Madeline for seven hours.
They spoke little.
At one point, Madeline fell asleep against the wall.
Arthur placed a blanket over her without touching anything else.
When the surgeon returned, Lily was stable.
Madeline cried.
Arthur did too.
