Chapter 1 - The Ghost at the Altar

The Saint Aurelia Ballroom was a masterpiece of extravagant billionaire luxury. Enormous crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the polished cream-and-gray marble floors. Hundreds of wealthy American guests, dressed in elegant evening gowns and expensive black tuxedos, sat among luxurious white floral arrangements and gold ceremonial stands, completely captivated by the beautiful bride standing at the altar.

Juliette Mercer, 29 years old, was a vision of perfection. Her dark-brown hair was styled in an elegant bridal updo, and she wore a magnificent strapless white satin ball gown with an enormous flowing skirt. Sparkling emerald earrings and a massive, expensive emerald necklace caught the chandelier light.

It was the perfect, million-dollar wedding.

Until the enormous wooden doors at the back of the grand ballroom slowly groaned open.

The orchestral music abruptly faltered. The guests turned around, their polite smiles vanishing.

Walking down the pristine marble aisle was a woman who completely shattered the luxurious atmosphere. She was barefoot, dragging her injured feet across the marble. She wore a dirty, oversized beige trench coat that hung loosely over a faded, light-blue hospital dress. White medical bandages were wrapped thickly around her jaw, neck, and lower legs. Her dark-brown wavy hair was tangled and messy, partially covering her bandaged face.

The wealthy guests murmured in disgust and confusion. Conversations completely stopped.
