Chapter 3 - The Unmasking

The barefoot woman stopped walking. She stood directly beneath the largest crystal chandelier in the center of the ballroom, just a few yards away from the altar.

The entire grand hall fell completely, suffocatingly silent. The only sound was the woman’s ragged, exhausted breathing.

She didn't yell back at Juliette. She didn't beg for money. With incredibly slow, trembling fingers, she reached up to the thick white medical bandages covering the left side of her face.

Juliette took an involuntary, terrified step backward, her breath hitching in her throat. She knew exactly what was under there. She was the one who put it there.

The woman slowly loosened the bandages, letting them fall away from her skin.

Revealed beneath the gauze were visible, fully healed burn scars stretching along the left side of her jaw and neck. But more importantly, the bandages revealed her face. The striking, familiar cheekbones. The dark-brown eyes that matched the billionaire patriarch standing at the altar.

It was Caroline Mercer.
