Chapter 1 - The Innocent Surprise
The modern American hospital emergency department buzzed with the usual daytime chaos. Bright fluorescent lights glared overhead, illuminating the polished cream-colored floors as doctors and nurses hurried past in their professional scrubs. Electronic monitors beeped softly in the background.
Sarah walked into the busy corridor, completely unaware that her entire world was about to shatter into a million irreparable pieces.
She was in her early 30s, a beautiful brunette with long, wavy hair resting effortlessly over her shoulders. She wore an elegant beige wool coat over a cream blouse, dark trousers, and a brown leather shoulder bag. In her hands, she clutched a simple brown paper lunch bag. Inside was her husband Ben’s favorite roast beef sandwich, a slice of homemade apple pie, and a small handwritten note wishing him a happy third anniversary.
Ben had been working grueling 80-hour weeks at this hospital as a surgical resident. Sarah just wanted to see him smile for five minutes.
She approached the main nurses’ station, offering a warm, hopeful smile. "Hi!" Sarah chirped cheerfully. "I'm here to surprise Ben with lunch!"
But the reaction she got made the smile completely freeze on her face.
