Chapter 7 - The Sister's Betrayal

Detective Vance slid the death certificate across the table toward Douglas.

Douglas looked down. At the bottom of the page, certifying the death and authorizing the immediate, closed-casket cremation of a random Jane Doe’s body to fake Caroline's death, was a single, elegant signature.

Juliette Mercer.

The silence in the ballroom shattered. The guests erupted into horrified whispers.

Douglas dropped the paper as if it were on fire. He turned slowly, looking at his youngest daughter in her sparkling emerald earrings and million-dollar dress.

"You?" Douglas choked out, pure agony tearing his voice apart. "You signed it? You locked your own sister in an asylum to burn?"

Juliette backed up against the wedding altar, her flawless makeup ruined by tears of panic. "Dad, listen to me! I had to! You were going to leave the entire company to her! You were going to make her the CEO! I deserved it! I did everything you asked, and you still picked her!"

Caroline finally moved. She took a slow, painful step closer to the altar, her bare feet making no sound on the polished marble. The bride instinctively retreated, her eyes completely filled with fear as the sister she tried to murder cornered her.
