Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

The next morning, the financial news networks across the country flashed an urgent breaking headline: Vance Enterprises Announces Immediate Termination and Federal Audit of Senior Executive Ryan Miller Amid Allegations of Embezzlement and Corporate Espionage.

Ryan sat on a cold wooden bench outside a public subway station, staring blankly at his dead smartphone screen. The battery hadn't died; the carrier had disconnected the line due to non-payment.

Every single corporate card he owned had been declined at breakfast. His bank accounts showed a balance of negative twelve dollars due to overdraft fees. His locker at the executive gym had already been cleared out by security, his clothes thrown into a plastic trash bag left outside the building.

He had tried to call his mother, his friends, his associates. Not a single person answered his calls. The moment the elite world realized Ryan Miller was entirely broke and crossed swords with Claire Vance, they treated him like a radioactive hazard.

A black town car slowly pulled up to the curb in front of the subway station.

The tinted window rolled down smoothly. Claire sat in the back seat, looking breathtakingly calm and composed, her red suit jacket catching the morning sun.
