Chapter 5 - The Reunion

Dominic pulled the heavy oak door open.
The basement was cold, dark, and filled with old storage crates. Sitting on the concrete floor, shivering in a cheap, worn-out maid uniform, was Sophia.
She was thirty-two, stunningly beautiful even with her messy brunette hair and exhausted, tear-stained face. When she saw the massive silhouette of the mafia boss standing at the top of the stairs, she gasped in pure terror, scrambling backward against the concrete wall.
Dominic walked slowly down the wooden steps.
He didn't look like a ruthless executioner anymore. He dropped to both knees right on the dirty concrete floor, entirely ignoring his expensive black suit.
"Sophia," Dominic choked out, tears of overwhelming guilt and profound love finally breaking through his hardened facade.
Sophia stared at him, the cinematic tension crushing the air out of the basement. She hadn't seen the man who broke her heart in six agonizing years.
"Where is my daughter?" Sophia wept hysterically, desperately trying to push past him. "What did that woman do to Lily?!"
"She is safe," Dominic vowed, gently catching Sophia’s trembling hands. "Lily is upstairs. She is perfectly safe, Sophia. I swear to you on my life."
Sophia collapsed against his chest, sobbing in pure, unadulterated relief. Dominic held her fiercely, burying his face in her hair, realizing how completely empty his massive empire had been without her.
