Chapter 5 - The Impossible Grouping

Mercer stared through the binoculars, his breathing stopping completely.

The camera finally revealed what Donovan had found.

Exactly fifty yards behind the untouched paper target, embedded deeply into the solid concrete wall, was a cluster of five fresh bullet impacts.

But they weren't scattered. They weren't randomly placed.

All five bullets were driven into the exact same hole.

It was an absolutely impossible, microscopically perfect grouping. A cluster the size of a single dime, fired from one hundred yards away, with a standard-issue M4, in a violent, unpredictable Wyoming crosswind.

It was a level of marksmanship that defied basic physics. It was a level of lethal precision that the elite infantrymen behind the barrier couldn't achieve in their wildest dreams.

Emma hadn't missed the paper target. She had intentionally fired around the edge of the paper silhouette, placing five consecutive rounds into a space so tight they practically melted together on the back wall.

Mercer slowly lowered the binoculars, his hands trembling violently. All the color drained from his arrogant face.

"How..." Mercer choked out, his voice cracking.

Donovan marched back up the gravel range. She didn't look at the Colonel. She walked directly up to Private Emma Carter.

"You aren't logistics support, are you?" Donovan asked quietly.

Emma didn't answer.
