Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Respect

"Don't touch me!" Mercer wailed hysterically as the federal agents forcefully hauled him to his feet.

They violently slapped heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists, completely ignoring his rank. They dragged the screaming, thrashing Colonel directly past the firing line. He was forced to do the ultimate walk of shame, paraded in handcuffs past the very support soldiers he had spent years abusing and humiliating.

His military reputation, his freedom, and his arrogant life were permanently, entirely destroyed. He was going to spend the rest of his natural life rotting in a federal military prison.

The tactical agents rounded up the corrupt members of Combat Group Charlie, shoving them into the back of the transport helicopters.

The chaotic, violent energy completely evaporated from the outdoor range.

Within minutes, the area was quiet, save for the howling Wyoming wind.

Emma handed her unloaded M4 rifle back to the range control desk. She turned around to face Master Sergeant Rachel Donovan.

The hardened veteran was standing perfectly still, her arms crossed, looking at Emma with profound, overwhelming respect. She didn't see a weak support soldier anymore. She saw an absolute equal.

"Five rounds in the exact same hole at one hundred yards," Donovan said softly, a rare, genuine smile crossing her face. "You could have just hit the paper and walked away. Why did you show off on the back wall?"
