Victoria testified in dress uniform because the defense had made rank part of the case.
They asked whether she expected obedience.
“Yes, in lawful military command.”
“Did you expect it in the hospital?”
“No.”
“You struck Sheriff Miller.”
“Yes.”
“You used combat training.”
“I used an open-hand defensive strike.”
“You humiliated him.”
“He grabbed federal evidence from my hand.”
“You wanted revenge for your daughter.”
“Yes.”
The attorney smiled.
“Then your judgment was compromised.”
Victoria looked at Margaret.
“My emotion explains why I cared. The records explain what happened.”
The answer shifted the room.
The defense attacked Daniel’s investigation.
Old.
Classified.
Incomplete.
Victoria agreed.
“Some facts remain unproven.”
