Chapter 17 - EMILY ON THE STAND

Emily entered the courtroom walking with a cane.
Not because she had fully recovered.
Because she chose to.
The defense asked about depression.
Medication.
Marital conflict.
Memory gaps.
She admitted all of it.
“You were unstable.”
“I was drugged.”
“You attacked hospital staff.”
“I resisted restraint.”
“You accused your husband’s family of conspiracy before seeing financial records.”
“I heard them discuss it at dinner.”
“You love your mother?”
“Yes.”
“You depend on her?”
“Sometimes.”
The attorney pointed toward Victoria.
“Isn’t it possible Colonel Hart influenced your memories?”
Emily looked at her mother.
Then back.
“She influenced my life. She did not put bruises on my arms.”
The jury saw the photographs.
