Chapter 1 - The Stray Puppy

The grand, luxury American estate was a fortress of absolute, terrifying power. Natural sunlight streamed through the massive open garden doors, reflecting off the polished marble floors of the breathtaking foyer. Heavily armed guards in dark suits lined the walls, standing perfectly frozen.
But the suffocating tension in the room wasn't caused by a rival cartel. It was caused by a three-year-old girl.
A terrified maid, a woman in her late twenties wearing a classic black and white uniform with a white apron, rushed frantically into the restricted foyer. She froze in sheer, unadulterated horror.
Her tiny daughter, Mia, was standing boldly in the center of the marble floor, directly in front of the ruthless mafia boss. Mia had dark curls tied with a pink bow, wearing a faded pink floral dress. One of her little white socks was slipping down her ankle. She was completely innocent and entirely fearless.
In her tiny arms, she was holding a small, dirty, shivering golden retriever puppy.
"Mia, no... get away from him," the maid pleaded in a panicked, breathless whisper, terrified the boss would explode.
But little Mia completely ignored her mother's panic. She looked straight up at Lorenzo. He was thirty-eight, a devastatingly handsome, towering man wearing a tailored black suit with an unbuttoned white shirt.
"Can you keep him?" Mia asked in a clear, innocent voice.
Lorenzo looked down at the child. His cold, intimidating expression remained stony, but a micro-expression of confusion flickered in his dark eyes at her complete lack of fear.
"I don't keep dogs," Lorenzo stated, his voice cold and dismissive.
The maid stood paralyzed a few feet away, her hands clasped together in terror.
"He doesn't have anybody," Mia replied softly, her voice incredibly steady.
Without breaking eye contact, Mia slowly crouched down and gently placed the shivering puppy on the polished marble floor, right next to Lorenzo's expensive leather shoes.
"I'll have my men find him a home," Lorenzo said, his jaw tightening.
Mia stood back up and studied the mafia boss's face with the unbearable, piercing attention of a child. She spoke a truth no one else in his empire dared to say.
"He's alone, too. Like you," Mia whispered quietly.
Lorenzo's breath caught in his throat. The most dangerous man in the city completely froze, his lethal, titanium walls entirely shattered by a toddler's six words.

"Try," Mia whispered.
👉 Lorenzo stared at the little girl, completely unaware that a monster was about to walk into the foyer and ruin the moment.
