Chapter 4 - The Stolen Diamonds

The next afternoon, the grand estate was buzzing with intense preparation for a massive syndicate gala.
Elena was keeping her head down, silently scrubbing the marble floors, praying that Camilla and Victor would just leave her and her daughter alone. The golden retriever puppy, now bathed and fluffy, was sleeping peacefully in a small bed in the corner of Elena’s tiny servant room, watched over by Mia.
Suddenly, a blood-curdling, hysterical shriek echoed from the master suite upstairs.
"My diamonds! Someone stole my diamonds!" Camilla wailed at the top of her lungs.
Within seconds, Lorenzo, Victor, and four heavily armed guards rushed into the hallway. Camilla was weeping fake, dramatic tears, pointing a manicured finger wildly into the air.
"My five-hundred-thousand-dollar diamond engagement necklace is gone!" Camilla sobbed, clutching Lorenzo’s tailored black suit. "I left it on my vanity! Someone took it!"
Victor immediately stepped forward, playing the role of the diligent, protective Underboss. "Nobody has left the estate, Boss. We'll search the servant's quarters immediately. Starting with the maid who has been acting incredibly suspicious all week."
Elena’s blood turned to absolute ice. She dropped her cleaning supplies, scrambling down the hall behind them as Victor led the armed guards directly to her small, modest room.
Victor confidently marched into the tiny bedroom. He didn't even pretend to search thoroughly. He walked straight over to Mia’s small toy box, flipped it over, and gasped in fake, theatrical shock.
Tumbling out of the plastic blocks and crayons was the massive, glittering diamond necklace.
"Well, well, well," Victor sneered, holding up the diamonds. "Looks like the charity case is a thief."
