Chapter 2 - The Grieving Widow Act

Two hours later, Dante was stabilized and moved to a secure intensive care room. The rhythmic beeping of the cardiac monitor was the only sound in the dim room.

Claire stood at the nurses' station, writing her medical report.

Suddenly, the VIP elevator chimed.

Stepping out was Serena, Dante’s glamorous, thirty-something fiancée. She wore a flawless designer trench coat over a dark evening dress, clutching a crocodile-skin handbag. Beside her stood Victor, Dante’s heavily armed, intensely arrogant Underboss.

Serena marched directly up to Claire’s desk. She didn't have a single real tear in her eyes.

"I am Serena Vance, Dante's fiancée," she announced, her voice dripping with cold, toxic entitlement. "I was told he was brought here after the drive-by shooting. What is his status?"

"He is in a medically induced coma, Ms. Vance," Claire replied professionally, refusing to let her own history show. "He suffered severe trauma, but his vitals are stabilizing."

Serena’s flawless, contoured face twitched. It wasn't relief. It was pure, unadulterated annoyance.

"Stabilizing?" Serena scoffed, leaning over the desk. "The paramedics said he was practically dead on arrival. Listen to me, Doctor. Dante is a very proud man. He wouldn't want to live hooked up to machines. I have his medical power of attorney. I want you to pull the plug immediately."

Claire’s blood turned to absolute ice. The cinematic realism of the betrayal hit her like a freight train.

Serena wasn't here to comfort her fiancé. She was here to finish the assassination.

"I cannot do that," Claire stated coldly, standing her ground against the billionaire socialite. "He is breathing on his own. He is going to survive."

👉 Serena glared at the doctor with pure venom, entirely unaware that the mafia boss was already waking up.
