Chapter 5 - The Lethal Syringe

"Close the curtains," Dante commanded, his voice dropping into a dark, freezing register devoid of any human mercy. "And step into the shadows."

Claire quickly drew the privacy curtains around the hospital bed, leaving a small gap. She backed into the dark corner of the room, her heart pounding in her throat. Dante immediately closed his eyes, perfectly mimicking the slow, shallow breathing of a comatose patient.

The heavy wooden door of the ICU room slowly creaked open.

Serena slipped into the room, followed closely by Victor.

"Is he conscious?" Victor whispered nervously, scanning the dim room.

"The stupid doctor said he was in a coma," Serena sneered, walking directly up to the edge of Dante's bed. She looked down at the bleeding, injured man she was supposed to marry. There was no love in her eyes—only pure, toxic greed.

Serena opened her crocodile-skin handbag. She pulled out a small, pre-filled medical syringe containing a clear liquid.

"If that doctor won't pull the plug, we'll just speed up the inevitable," Serena whispered coldly. "A massive dose of potassium will just look like a sudden cardiac arrest from the trauma. Nobody will ask questions, and we take the empire tomorrow."

Victor nodded, stepping forward to hold Dante’s heavily tattooed arm down.

Serena uncapped the needle and reached toward the IV line connected to Dante’s vein.
