Chapter 3 - The Traitors' Confession
Lorenzo’s survival instincts snapped into absolute overdrive.
“Act normal,” Lorenzo ordered Elena in a fierce whisper. “Do not look at me.”
Instantly, Lorenzo closed his dark eyes. He completely relaxed his facial muscles, letting his head loll to the side, forcing his breathing to slow into the rhythmic, shallow pattern of a comatose patient.
Elena quickly picked up a medical chart, her hands shaking violently as she pretended to check the IV drip. She pulled Mia close to her side.
The heavy suite doors swung open.
Victoria, Lorenzo’s stunning, high-society fiancée, strutted into the room. She wore a sharp crimson dress, a massive diamond engagement ring, and an arrogant, completely bored expression. She didn't look like a grieving woman. She looked like a predator.
Walking right behind her was Silvio, Lorenzo’s heavily armed, trusted underboss.
Victoria walked up to the edge of the bed, looking down at Lorenzo with pure, unadulterated disgust.
“He’s still breathing,” Victoria scoffed, crossing her arms. She turned her venomous glare toward the underboss. “I thought you said the new dosage would finish him today, Silvio. My patience is running out. The board needs the transfer of power signed by tomorrow morning.”
Silvio stepped forward, casually checking the digital output on the IV machine.
“It takes time, Victoria,” Silvio replied smoothly, completely unbothered. “The neurotoxin I’m putting in his IV line mimics natural organ failure. By midnight tonight, his heart will just quietly stop. There will be no autopsy, and you will inherit the entire empire as his grieving widow.”
Standing quietly in the corner of the room, Elena stopped breathing.
