Chapter 7 - The Assassin in the Dark

Silvio stepped quietly into the dark medical suite.
He didn't bother turning on the main overhead lights. The glowing green numbers on the heart monitor illuminated his cruel, arrogant face. In his right hand, he held a heavy, suppressed pistol. In his left, a final syringe filled with an emergency lethal dose, just in case the IV hadn't worked fast enough.
He looked at the bed, seeing the lump of blankets and the slow, steady heartbeat on the monitor. He thought Lorenzo was still clinging to life.
Silvio turned his weapon directly toward Elena, who was standing defensively in front of the sofa, shielding little Mia with her own body.
“Time’s up, nurse,” Silvio sneered, his voice a low, venomous whisper. He tossed the lethal syringe onto the foot of the bed. “Give him the injection. I want your fingerprints on the plastic.”
Elena stood her ground. Her entire body was trembling with absolute terror, but her maternal instinct gave her a spine of steel.
“I won't do it,” Elena stated, glaring at the assassin.
Silvio scoffed, raising the barrel of the suppressed pistol and aiming it squarely at Elena’s chest.
“I figured you’d be difficult,” Silvio laughed darkly, stepping closer to the bed. “Then I’ll do it myself. And after his heart stops, I’ll put a bullet in you and the kid to tie up my loose ends. I’ll tell the police you tried to murder the boss and I walked in too late.”
Silvio leaned over the mattress, raising the syringe to plunge it into the blankets.
