Chapter 6 - The Midnight Trap

The golden sunset slowly faded into a pitch-black night. The only illumination in the penthouse suite came from the glowing city lights of New York shining through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The tension in the room was absolute, suffocating, and cinematic.
Lorenzo refused to die in that bed. With Elena’s help, he slowly forced himself to his feet. His muscles were severely atrophied, his body weak, but his sheer, terrifying willpower was monstrous. He disconnected himself entirely from the life-support machines.
To maintain the illusion, Elena cleverly bypassed the heart monitor, looping a pre-recorded, slow heartbeat to the glowing green screen so anyone listening from the hallway would think he was still comatose.
Little Mia sat bravely on the leather sofa, clutching her stuffed bunny. She watched the tall, scarred man moving through the shadows.
“Are you a superhero?” Mia asked innocently in the quiet room.
Lorenzo stopped. He looked at the little girl in the purple princess dress who had literally sung him back from the edge of death. A dark, faint smile touched his lips.
“No, little one,” Lorenzo whispered softly. “I'm the monster that eats the bad guys. And I'm going to make sure nobody ever hurts you again.”
At exactly 11:55 PM, the heavy deadbolt on the suite doors clicked loudly.
Silvio was coming back to finish the job personally.
Lorenzo moved with surprising silence, slipping away from the medical bed and hiding deep in the pitch-black shadows behind the heavy velvet window curtains. Elena arranged the pillows under the blankets to make it look like a body was still lying there.
