Chapter 1 - The Dropped Towels

The deafening crash echoed down the grand, cavernous hallway of the luxurious Connecticut estate.

Claire, a thirty-four-year-old nanny wearing a worn, faded cardigan, froze on her hands and knees. She had been crouched near the baseboards, her fingers hovering just inches away from the ornate, brass ventilation grate set into the wall.

She turned her head sharply.

Standing a few feet away was Mrs. Harper, the estate’s older house manager. She wore a pristine, standard gray housekeeper uniform, but her normally composed face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated terror. A massive stack of freshly folded white towels had slipped from her trembling hands, scattering across the cold, polished marble floor.

Mrs. Harper wasn’t looking at the mess. She was staring directly at Claire’s hand hovering over the air vent. The older woman slapped both hands over her mouth, her eyes wide with a paralyzing, sickening panic.

Claire didn't move. Her sharp, suspicious eyes locked onto the terrified house manager.

For weeks, a mysterious, debilitating illness had been ravaging the estate. Vincent’s five-year-old twin boys, Leo and Sam, were deteriorating rapidly. They had constant migraines, severe lethargy, and a persistent, rattling cough that no top-tier pediatrician could diagnose. The doctors called it a rare autoimmune flare-up.

But Claire knew better. She had practically raised those boys since their mother passed away. They were perfectly healthy until exactly one month ago.
