Chapter 9 - The Automated Trap

The heavy black canister clattered loudly against the fine china.
"This is industrial paint solvent," Claire announced, pointing directly at Eleanor. "Your fiancée had it wired into the east wing HVAC system. She's been controlling it from her smartphone, gassing your children every single night so she can inherit your estate."
The board members gasped in absolute horror.
Vincent stared at the canister. His dark eyes darted to Eleanor, his face draining of all color. "Eleanor... what is she talking about?"
Eleanor was hyperventilating, realizing she was completely cornered. "She's lying! She planted it! Vincent, she's obsessed with you! She wants me gone!"
Eleanor frantically reached into her designer clutch and pulled out her smartphone. She opened the smart-home app, intending to trigger the estate's total lockdown protocol to trap them inside while she remotely deleted the automated logs.
But Vincent moved with terrifying, explosive speed.
He lunged across the table, grabbing Eleanor's wrist with bone-crushing force and snatching the phone from her hand.
Vincent looked down at the glowing screen.
The app was open. The scheduling log was clearly visible in high-definition. It showed an active timer labeled NURSERY DISPENSER, programmed to release the toxic vapor every night at midnight.
Vincent’s exhaustion completely evaporated, replaced by a dark, lethal, and uncontrollable fury. He looked up at the woman he was supposed to marry.
