Chapter 3 - The Silent Threat

Cut back to the present. The towels lay scattered across the marble floor.

Claire slowly stood up, her worn cardigan brushing against the wall. She stepped over the white fabric and approached the trembling older woman.

"You know what's in the vents, don't you?" Claire whispered, her voice fierce and protective. "Mrs. Harper, look at me. The boys are dying. What is she pumping into their room?"

Mrs. Harper shook her head violently, tears spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. She took a terrified step backward, looking frantically over her shoulder toward the grand staircase.

"I can't," Mrs. Harper choked out, her voice barely a squeak. "She'll ruin me. She said she would plant stolen silver in my bag and take my pension. Please, Claire, just leave it alone. You're going to get us both fired."

"I don't care if I get fired!" Claire hissed, grabbing the older woman's hands. "I care about Leo and Sam! They are five years old!"

"Having a little chat, ladies?"

The cold, melodic voice echoed from the top of the grand staircase.

Claire and Mrs. Harper snapped their heads up. Standing on the landing was Eleanor. She was a striking woman in her early thirties, wearing a sleek crimson dress that perfectly matched her manicured nails. She held her glowing smartphone in one hand, looking down at the two employees with absolute, venomous disdain.

Mrs. Harper instantly dropped to her knees, frantically gathering the towels to avoid eye contact.

Eleanor slowly descended the stairs, her high heels clicking sharply against the marble. She stopped right in front of Claire, her eyes darting to the brass ventilation grate.
