Chapter 4 - The Vicious Strike

Vanessa had lunged across the pantry like a cornered predator.
Before Olivia could even run, Vanessa grabbed her violently by the collar of her black uniform, slamming her back against the wooden shelves.
"What did you see?" Vanessa hissed, her elegant face twisting into an ugly, demonic mask.
"Nothing, ma'am! I swear!" Olivia cried softly, terrified of the powerful woman.
Vanessa didn't believe her. Without a second of hesitation, she raised her right hand and slapped Olivia viciously across the face. The heavy platinum cocktail ring on her finger struck Olivia’s cheekbone with a sickening crack.
Olivia dropped to her knees, crying out in pain as her vision blurred, clutching her face.
Vanessa crouched down, grabbing a handful of Olivia’s dark hair to force the maid to look her in the eyes.
"You listen to me, you pathetic little rat," Vanessa whispered, her voice dripping with venom. "If you breathe a single word of what you just saw to Julian, I will completely destroy your life. I know your mother is currently receiving treatments at the cancer ward downtown. The hospital board answers to my family. One phone call from me, and her charity funding vanishes. She will die on the street."
Olivia had sobbed, paralyzed by the sheer, calculating cruelty of the threat. She nodded frantically, promising to keep her mouth shut.
Now, standing in the empty, glowing dining room, the throbbing pain in Olivia’s cheek was nothing compared to the crushing guilt in her chest.
Julian turned back to her, the heavy dining room doors clicking shut as the last guest departed. They were entirely alone.
