Chapter 7 - The Final Piece of the Puzzle

Julian stared at the breathtaking blue jewel resting in his hand. The warm candlelight danced across the facets of the sapphire, but the look in his eyes was absolute, glacial winter.
"My mother's necklace," Julian whispered.
He slowly lifted his gaze to look down at the weeping woman in the red dress.
"I... I was just borrowing it, Julian!" Vanessa sobbed hysterically from the floor. "I wanted to wear it tonight! I wanted to surprise you! I was going to put it right back!"
"You don't have the combination to the safe, Vanessa," Julian stated, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "And you wouldn't take the real necklace to wear it... unless you replaced it with a fake."
He looked back into the red clutch. There was one more item inside.
He pulled out a cheap, plastic burner phone. It was completely out of character for a high-society woman who carried a customized gold iPhone.
Julian tapped the screen. It wasn't locked. He opened the most recent text message thread.
The messages were from an unsaved number, but the context was undeniable.
Buyer is ready at the private airfield. 11 PM tonight.Did you make the swap?Just keep the idiot busy at dinner until the wire transfer clears.
Julian read the messages in silence. He didn't scream. He didn't throw the phone. The cinematic realism of his reaction was chilling. He simply realized that the last two years of his life, his engagement, and the woman sitting on his floor, had all been a meticulously planned, cold-blooded heist.
He looked at Olivia. "Is this what you saw her doing in the pantry?"
