Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Queen

Julian’s jaw locked. The muscles in his neck strained visibly against his white collar.
Stealing his family's money was one thing. But threatening the life of an innocent, dying woman to cover it up crossed a line that Julian would never, ever forgive.
"Julian, please," Vanessa begged, crawling across the floor and grabbing the pant leg of his black suit. "I was in debt! My family is bankrupt! I had no choice! Please don't call the police! I love you!"
Julian looked down at her. "You don't know what love is."
He calmly reached into his pocket and pulled out his own cell phone. He dialed a number and put it on speakerphone, setting it on the dining table.
"Security," a gruff voice answered instantly.
"Bring the local authorities to the grand dining room," Julian commanded smoothly. "And contact the airfield manager. A private charter jet is attempting to leave with stolen assets. Ground it."
Vanessa let out a guttural, horrific scream of pure despair. She lunged forward, trying to grab the sapphire necklace from Julian’s hand, but he simply stepped out of her reach.
Within seconds, the heavy double doors burst open. Three of Julian’s massive private security guards stepped in, followed closely by two local police officers who had been stationed outside the estate.
"Arrest her," Julian said, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Grand larceny, extortion, and assault."
The officers hauled a thrashing, screaming Vanessa to her feet. The elegant, untouchable woman was completely ruined. Her perfect updo was a tangled mess, her dark red evening dress dragging pathetically on the floor as the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.
"You're nothing without me, Julian!" Vanessa shrieked as she was dragged away.

"I'm exactly who I've always been," Julian replied coldly, turning his back on her.
