Chapter 5 - The Desperate Defense

Vanessa didn't wait for Olivia to answer. She immediately launched her counterattack.
"She is a liar, Julian!" Vanessa snapped, marching around the mahogany table, her dark red dress sweeping across the floor. "Look at her! She’s been acting erratic all night! I caught her trying to steal from my purse in the coatroom an hour ago! I slapped her because she was trying to rob us!"
Olivia gasped, her eyes widening in pure horror at the fabricated lie. "No! That's not true! I never touched your purse!"
"You see how she lies?!" Vanessa yelled, pointing a manicured finger at the terrified maid. "Julian, she is manipulating you! You are taking the word of a minimum-wage servant over your own fiancée! Fire her right now, or I am leaving!"
Julian stood perfectly still. The crystal chandeliers cast long shadows over his sharp, handsome features. He didn't look angry. He looked profoundly disappointed.
He slowly turned his head to look at the dark red designer clutch resting on the edge of the dining table near Vanessa's chair.
"If she was trying to steal from your purse, Vanessa," Julian said calmly, his deep voice slicing through her hysterical shouting. "Then you wouldn't mind if I took a look inside it. Just to make sure nothing is missing."
Vanessa’s face turned the color of ash. She completely stopped breathing.
Her eyes darted to the red clutch. The real, priceless sapphire necklace was still resting at the bottom of the bag, wrapped in a silk handkerchief.
"No," Vanessa stammered, her voice suddenly trembling. "That... that is an invasion of my privacy, Julian. I won't allow it."
