Julian rolled his eyes, taking another slow, arrogant sip of his champagne. "Save the dramatic father-of-the-bride speech, Marcus. We both know you have absolutely no choice but to walk her down that aisle."

But Elena wasn't crying.

Despite the throbbing bruise on her cheek, her dark eyes were completely dry. She didn't look like a terrified victim; she looked like a soldier waiting for an exact command.

Without saying a single word, Marcus and Elena simultaneously reached into their pockets.

They both pulled out their smartphones.

Julian’s arrogant smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. He watched in mild confusion as the father and daughter looked at their glowing screens. They didn't dial 911. They didn't call for security.

With perfect, synchronized precision, Marcus and Elena tapped heavily on their screens.

Julian frowned, lowering his champagne glass. "What are you doing? Put the phones away. The guests are waiting for us in the hall."
