Chapter 3 - The Missing Maid

The silence between Luca and Vanessa was suffocating.
Vanessa swallowed hard, her diamond earrings shaking as she took a tiny step backward in her plum evening gown. "Luca, darling, don't be ridiculous. I fired Marisol because she was caught stealing from the silver vault."
"She didn't steal anything!" Emma cried out, wiping her red, swollen eyes.
Luca didn't look at Emma. He kept his terrifying gaze locked entirely on Vanessa. For the past month, Luca had been out of the country expanding his syndicate’s operations. He had left Vanessa in charge of managing the massive estate.
When he returned three days ago, Marisol—one of his most trusted, hardworking housekeepers—was gone. Vanessa had presented him with a flawless story about missing silver and a swift termination. Luca had been too busy to question it.
Until right now.
"Who is this man, Vanessa?" Luca demanded, his voice dangerously calm.
"He's Senator Marcus Thorne," Vanessa said quickly, her voice pitching up with panic. "He's the key investor for the downtown casino project! He brings fifty million dollars to the table, Luca! You cannot offend him over a hysterical maid!"
Marcus sneered, brushing off his navy blue suit jacket. "Your future wife understands how business is done, Moretti. A little hospitality is expected when I visit."
Luca slowly turned his head to look at Marcus. "Hospitality."
"Exactly," Marcus said arrogantly. "Now, tell this little brat to dry her tears and pour me another drink."
Luca didn't move toward Marcus. He turned back to Emma. The terrifying aura around him softened just a fraction as he looked at the terrified young woman.
"Emma," Luca said smoothly. "What happened to Marisol?"

Emma trembled violently. She looked at Vanessa, who was silently mouthing the word fired with a vicious, warning glare. But Emma knew this was her only chance.
