Chapter 6 - The Secret Recording

Emma pulled out a cheap, cracked smartphone. Her hands were shaking, but her eyes were filled with a sudden, fierce determination.

"I don't have proof of what he did in the hallway," Emma said, her voice steadying. "But I have proof of what Miss Vanessa did in the kitchen."

Vanessa’s face turned the color of ash. "Give me that phone!" she shrieked, lunging forward with her manicured claws outstretched.

Before Vanessa could even take two steps, Luca effortlessly stepped between them. He didn't even raise his hands. His sheer, terrifying physical presence was a brick wall that stopped his fiancée dead in her tracks.

"Play it, Emma," Luca ordered.

Emma unlocked the screen and pressed play on a saved voice memo. She held the phone up so the speaker amplified the audio perfectly into the quiet ballroom.

“You listen to me, you pathetic little rat,” Vanessa’s recorded voice hissed clearly through the speakers. “Senator Thorne brings money to this house. You bring nothing. You go back out there, you take him into that guest room, and you keep him happy. If you say no, I swear to God, I will plant the Roosevelt silver in your locker and make sure you spend the next ten years in a federal prison. Do you understand me?!”

Then came the sound of Marisol sobbing, begging to be let go, followed by the sickening sound of a harsh slap.

The audio cut out.

The entire ballroom was completely silent. The string quartet had officially stopped playing. The elite guests stared at Vanessa in absolute, unadulterated disgust.

Marcus Thorne’s arrogant smirk melted off his face. He took a slow step backward, looking toward the heavy oak doors of the ballroom.
