Chapter 4 - The Hallway Trap

"Tell him the truth, Emma, and you will never work in this city again," Vanessa hissed, completely dropping her sophisticated facade.
"Speak," Luca commanded, his voice completely drowning out his fiancée's threat.
Emma took a deep, shaky breath. "Last month, when you were in Europe, Senator Thorne came to the estate for a private dinner with Miss Vanessa."
Marcus rolled his eyes, crossing his arms defensively.
"Marisol was assigned to serve his drinks," Emma continued, tears pooling in her eyes again as she remembered her friend's terror. "She came running into the kitchen crying. She said the Senator had cornered her in the east hallway. He grabbed her. He tried to pull her into one of the empty guest suites."
Luca’s hands slowly curled into massive fists at his sides.
"Marisol fought him off," Emma sobbed. "She ran straight to Miss Vanessa to report it. We thought Miss Vanessa would call security."
"She was lying!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing over the background music. "The girl was trying to extort the Senator!"
"She wasn't lying!" Emma yelled back, shocking herself with her own volume. "Miss Vanessa told Marisol that if she didn't go back out there and 'keep the Senator happy,' she would call the police, plant stolen silver in her bag, and have her deported!"
The ballroom seemed to hold its collective breath. A few wealthy guests nearby had stopped talking, turning their heads to watch the drama unfold.
Luca stood perfectly still. The muscles in his tattooed neck strained as he processed the sheer, sickening magnitude of the betrayal. The woman he was supposed to marry had turned his home—a place that was supposed to be a sanctuary for his loyal staff—into a hunting ground.
