Chapter 4 - The Discovery in the Dark

Emma’s mind flashed back to exactly 3:00 PM that afternoon.
The sprawling mansion had been quiet. Julian was supposedly stuck at the corporate office, and Emma had been tasked with polishing the silver in the massive, dimly lit butler’s pantry just off the main kitchen.
She had been quietly wiping down a tray when the heavy oak door creaked open.
Emma had ducked behind the towering shelving unit, not wanting to be scolded for being in the way. Through the gap in the shelves, she saw Vivian sneak into the room. The elegant wife was wearing her red evening gown, looking over her shoulder nervously.
Vivian walked straight over to the decanting station, where Julian’s favorite $5,000 bottle of imported red wine was breathing for dinner.
Emma watched in utter confusion as Vivian reached into her diamond-studded clutch purse. She pulled out a small, unmarked glass vial filled with a clear, odorless liquid. With trembling, frantic hands, Vivian popped the cork and poured the entire contents of the vial directly into Julian’s wine glass.
Emma’s breath had caught in her throat. She instinctively took a step backward in shock.
Her heel bumped against a heavy metal serving cart. The wheels squeaked loudly in the silent room.
Vivian’s head snapped around. Her dark eyes locked onto Emma hiding in the shadows.
The empty glass vial dropped from Vivian’s hand, shattering against the marble floor.
"What are you doing in here?" Vivian hissed, her face twisting into a mask of pure, demonic rage.
