Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rat

Vivian stared at the crystal glass hovering inches from her face as if it were a loaded gun.
"No," Vivian whispered, her hands shaking violently. "I don't want any."
"You love this vintage," Julian said coldly, taking a step closer. "If Emma is lying, and it's just wine... prove it. Drink the glass, Vivian."
"I have a headache!" Vivian shrieked, slapping the glass away.
The crystal goblet shattered against the hardwood floor. The dark red wine pooled on the wood like a puddle of blood.
The silence that followed was deafening. Vivian realized instantly what she had just done. She had just confirmed everything.
Julian stared at the shattered glass, then slowly looked back up at the woman he had been married to for four years.
"For the last two months, I’ve been experiencing numbness in my hands," Julian said, his voice a low, terrifying rumble. "Chronic fatigue. Heart palpitations. My private doctor couldn't figure out why a perfectly healthy man was suddenly showing signs of acute heavy metal poisoning."
Vivian scrambled backward, her chair tipping over with a loud crash. "Julian, please! I can explain! It wasn't me! It was my father's idea! He needed the corporate buyout!"
"You've been slipping tasteless arsenic into my food for weeks," Julian deduced, the horrifying reality finally snapping into place. "But it was taking too long. So you decided to finish the job tonight with a concentrated dose."

"I was forced to do it!" Vivian screamed, completely dropping her elegant facade, morphing into a desperate, cornered rat. She pointed a vicious finger at Emma. "She helped me! The maid is the one who bought the vials! Arrest her!"
