Chapter 2 - The Wicked Stepmother

The heavy mahogany doors to Dax’s home office slammed shut.

Standing in the center of the room was Vanessa. She was Dax’s new fiancée, a thirty-something socialite draped in a ridiculously expensive emerald silk dress. Her face was twisted into an ugly mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

"Are you insane, Dax?!" Vanessa shrieked, slamming her manicured hands onto his desk. "You hired that woman on the spot? Leo needs a strict disciplinary academy in Switzerland! We already agreed to send him away on Friday! He's a monster!"

Dax ran a heavily tattooed hand over his face, looking completely exhausted. The cinematic realism of his deep, agonizing fatigue was palpable. Since his first wife passed away two years ago, Leo had turned into an uncontrollable terror. The boy had violently chased away six elite nannies in a single month.

"He's not going to a boarding school, Vanessa," Dax stated, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that demanded respect. "He is my son. And Maya is the first person who didn't run crying out the front door. She stays."

Vanessa’s jaw locked. She forced a tight, artificial smile, walking around the desk to rub Dax’s broad shoulders.

"I just want what's best for our new life together, darling," Vanessa purred, though her eyes were cold and calculating.

Outside the cracked office door, Maya was quietly walking down the hallway. She paused, her natural breathing slowing down as she observed the interaction. The young nanny had a degree in child psychology, and her instincts were screaming that something was fundamentally wrong.
