Chapter 5 - The Secret Alliance

The next morning, Dax left early for a syndicate business meeting, leaving Vanessa in charge of the estate.

Maya walked into Leo’s bedroom. The boy immediately grabbed a heavy textbook from his desk, raising it aggressively as if he were about to throw it at her head to fulfill Vanessa's orders.

Maya didn't flinch. She calmly walked over, knelt down to his eye level, and gently placed her hands over his trembling fists.

"You don't have to pretend anymore, Leo," Maya whispered softly, looking directly into his terrified brown eyes. "I heard her last night."

The textbook slipped from Leo’s fingers, crashing onto the floor. The boy’s arrogant facade completely evaporated. He collapsed to his knees, burying his face into Maya’s black dress, sobbing with raw, agonizing relief.

"She's going to send me away!" Leo wept, clutching her white collar. "She says my dad hates me!"

"Your dad loves you more than his own life," Maya promised, wrapping her arms protectively around the child. "Vanessa is a liar. And I am going to prove it."

Maya looked around the bedroom. She noticed an old, dusty teddy bear sitting on the top shelf of the bookcase. It was a gift from Leo's late mother. Maya remembered reading in the estate files that the late mother had been deeply paranoid about security.

Maya grabbed a chair, reached up, and felt the back of the bear. Her fingers brushed against a small, hard plastic switch. A hidden nanny-cam.

👉 Maya activated the recording device, completely unaware that Vanessa was already setting up a lethal frame-job downstairs.
