Chapter 7 - The Unlikely Witness

The two massive security guards immediately grabbed Maya’s simple black tote bag from the kitchen counter. They dumped the contents onto the pristine white marble island.
Right on top of Maya’s notebooks and keys, a massive, glittering diamond ring tumbled out, hitting the stone with a heavy clink.
The crowd of wealthy guests gasped in absolute horror.
"I told you!" Vanessa shrieked triumphantly, throwing her arms around Dax’s broad shoulders. "She's a manipulative thief! Call the police immediately, Dax! Have her locked away for twenty years!"
Dax looked at the ring, then looked at Maya. The betrayal in his eyes was cinematic and profound. He had trusted her to heal his son, and she had allegedly robbed him blind.
"You have five minutes to pack your things before I call the cops," Dax stated, his voice completely devoid of mercy.
Maya didn't beg. She didn't cry. She stood tall, her curly hair perfectly framing a face of absolute, titanium resolve.
Before Maya could speak, the quiet maid in the grey uniform suddenly stepped forward from the shadows of the pantry.
"She didn't steal it, sir," the maid said, her voice shaking with terror, but her eyes burning with newfound courage. "I was polishing the silver in the dining room an hour ago. I saw Miss Vanessa walk into the kitchen, open Maya's bag, and drop the ring inside herself."
