Chapter 1 - The Hallway Meal

The multi-million-dollar modern luxury home was an architectural masterpiece of pristine white marble floors, soaring ceilings, and exquisite interior design. At the center of the estate’s main wing, a magnificent hallway led directly into a breathtaking formal dining room featuring a large, round dark wood dining table illuminated by a brilliant, cascading crystal chandelier.
Inside the formal dining room, the atmosphere was filled with the soft clinking of silver and the murmurs of polite, privileged conversation.
But just outside the threshold of that luxurious room, a scene of profound, heartbreaking cruelty was unfolding.
A young girl named Maya was walking slowly across the pristine marble floors, carrying a bright blue food tray loaded with a meager, cold meal. She was eight years old, with her hair styled in neat pigtails, wearing a simple pink plaid button-down shirt and comfortable jeans.
Guiding her coldly by the shoulder was her grandmother, Eleanor. Eleanor was a stern, uncompromising woman in her sixties with short, perfectly styled grey hair, wearing a rich burgundy long-short blouse and tailored black pants.
Eleanor escorted the little girl away from the warmth of the formal dining table, marching her out into the cold, drafty hallway.
"Over there," Eleanor commanded sharply, pointing a manicured finger toward a small, isolated corner next to the family’s loyal Golden Retriever.

Maya didn't argue. She lowered her head, fighting back heavy tears, and sat down quietly on a small, uncomfortable wooden stool in the hallway right next to the dog, preparing to eat her dinner entirely alone while the rest of the family feasted just feet away.
