Chapter 2 - The Mother's Absence

To understand why an eight-year-old child was being treated like an untouchable outcast in her own home, one had to look back at the tragic death that had shattered the family exactly one year ago.
Maya’s beloved mother had passed away during a difficult, highly complicated childbirth shortly after giving birth to a younger sibling who unfortunately also did not survive. The devastating loss completely broke the household.
Lucas, Maya’s father, was a remarkably handsome, deeply devoted corporate executive in his late thirties. To help his grieving family navigate the overwhelming trauma, Lucas invited his mother, Eleanor, to move into the sprawling mansion. He believed his mother would provide a warm, comforting maternal presence for little Maya.
He was catastrophically, heartbreakingly wrong.
Eleanor harbor a deeply toxic, irrational, and venomous resentment toward Maya. In the darkest, most twisted corners of her grieving, narcissistic mind, Eleanor actively blamed the eight-year-old child for the death of her daughter-in-law and the lost baby. She looked at Maya not as a grieving granddaughter who needed love, but as a curse that had brought tragedy to the family name.
When Lucas was home, Eleanor played the role of the devoted, supportive grandmother flawlessly, showering the child with fake affection. But the absolute second Lucas packed his bags for his frequent, multi-day business trips to secure critical corporate contracts, Eleanor’s monstrous mask completely fell off.
