Chapter 1 - The Broken Question

The grand double doors of the luxury penthouse clicked open, letting in the cold, biting night air.
I stood completely frozen beside the entrance, my elegant dark travel bag resting against my leg. I wore a simple black dress beneath a long black coat. My hair was pulled into a loose updo, hiding the trembling in my shoulders. For seven years, I had been the loyal, invisible wife of Dante Moretti, the most feared, ruthless mafia boss in New York.
And tonight, Dante had brought her home.
Dante stepped into the penthouse foyer. The towering, thirty-nine-year-old apex predator wore a fitted black suit, his dark wavy hair framing his devastatingly handsome face. But he wasn't alone.
Bianca walked in right beside him. The glamorous brunette wore a fitted, deep-red evening gown, her hand resting aggressively, possessively against Dante’s chest. She looked at me, a cruel, victorious smile touching her painted lips.
My heart physically shattered, but I refused to let the tears fall.
"If I begged you to stay…" I whispered, my voice quiet, completely broken. "Would you?"
Dante stopped. The intense, gray-blue eyes that had once looked at me with absolute devotion now held only cold, calculated detachment. He hesitated for only a fraction of a second. Then, he looked past me, entirely ignoring my bleeding heart.
"Bring the car around," Dante ordered coldly into his phone, wrapping his arm around Bianca's waist.
My expression went completely still.

I didn't scream. I didn't beg. With cinematic, chilling calmness, I slowly slid the diamond wedding ring off my finger. I placed it gently on the marble console table, right beside our framed, beautiful wedding photograph.
👉 I picked up my travel bag, but Dante’s arrogant dismissal was about to hit a devastating, concrete wall.
