Chapter 2 - The Two Heartbeats

As I turned to walk out the door, abandoning seven years of my life, Bianca stepped deeper into the foyer.
Her victorious smirk suddenly faltered. She noticed something tiny, partly hidden beneath the edge of the heavy silver wedding frame. She reached out her manicured hand toward the marble table.
But Dante’s lethal instincts kicked in. He saw it first. With blinding speed, he abruptly caught Bianca’s wrist, stopping her mid-air.
"What is that?" Dante demanded, suddenly tense, his intense gaze snapping from the table to my back.
He let go of Bianca and picked up the small, glossy square.
All the color violently drained from his face. The cinematic realism of his profound, paralyzing horror was breathtaking. He physically staggered backward, his expensive luxury watch catching the warm lamp light as his heavily tattooed hand began to tremble violently.
Bianca saw the image and slowly, fearfully stepped away from him, realizing she was suddenly standing next to a live bomb.
It was an ultrasound photograph.
Dante looked from the glossy image to my back, visibly shaken for the very first time in his ruthless life. The untouchable king of New York was gasping for air.
I stopped at the doorway. I didn't drop my bag. I didn't turn my body. I only turned my head slightly, letting him see the cold, absolute finality in my hazel eyes.

"There were two heartbeats," I whispered softly, my voice carrying the devastating weight of an absolute nightmare.
👉 Dante stared at the photo, entirely unaware that the nightmare he had just triggered had actually started exactly three weeks ago.
