Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Freedom

"Elena!" Dante cried out, scrambling to his feet, desperate to stop me.

"Don't follow me, Dante," I commanded, projecting an unbreakable, titanium authority that stopped the mafia boss dead in his tracks. "If you ever loved me, if you truly want to honor the babies we lost, you will let me walk away."

Dante froze. He looked at the ultrasound photograph still clutched tightly in his hand. The absolute finality of my words crushed his soul. He realized that holding me hostage would only turn him into the monster I was running from.

He slowly lowered his head in utter, devastating defeat.

I turned my back on the luxury penthouse, stepped into the private elevator, and pressed the button for the lobby. The steel doors slid shut, severing my ties to the violent underworld forever.

I didn't take any of his money. I didn't take the expensive cars or the jewelry.

Six months later, I was living in a quiet, beautiful coastal town entirely across the country. I opened a small bakery, filling my days with the scent of fresh bread and the warmth of the sun. The bruising on my heart was slowly healing.

Dante remained in New York. He ruled his massive, untouchable empire with cold, absolute efficiency. But the penthouse remained a mausoleum. He never brought another woman home. The ultrasound photograph remained perfectly framed on the marble console table, a constant, agonizing reminder of the universe he threw away for a merger.

I had lost everything in that penthouse, but by walking away, I had finally found my peace.

If you were Elena, would you have given Dante a second chance after he destroyed the woman who hurt you, or was walking away the ultimate, perfect justice?
