Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the File

The cinematic tension in the dark hallway outside the medical suite spiked to a paralyzing level. Lorenzo couldn't tear his eyes away from the little girl in the floral dress who had just performed a miracle.

"What do you mean, Marco?" Lorenzo demanded softly, his voice carrying the lethal, freezing edge of a man who demanded absolute clarity.

"And there's a reason she said that," Marco finished, pulling a heavily redacted manila folder from the inside pocket of his suit jacket. "My men ran a mandatory background check on the new housekeeping staff. The woman who claims to be the toddler's mother submitted a fake identity. I pulled the fingerprints from her living quarters this morning."

Lorenzo snatched the folder from his underboss. When he flipped it open and saw the high-resolution surveillance photograph inside, all the air violently rushed out of his lungs.

The woman working in his mansion wasn't a stranger. It was Elena.

Four years ago, Elena was a brilliant, kind civilian and the only woman Lorenzo had ever truly loved. They had secretly planned to leave the violent underworld behind. But before they could escape, Elena was tragically killed in a horrific, fiery car crash orchestrated by an anonymous rival family. The loss had completely broken Lorenzo, forcing him back into the darkness. To secure peace for his vulnerable daughter, Sophie, he had begrudgingly entered an arranged marriage with Camilla, a cold, calculating mafia princess from a neighboring cartel.

But the photograph proved the impossible. Elena wasn't dead.
