Chapter 2 - The Cold Distance

The cinematic tension hanging over the marble floor was absolute.

Emma didn't scream. She didn't drop to her knees and beg him to leave her alone. The absolute, terrifying restraint she showed was infinitely more powerful than a tantrum.

She stood tall in her champagne gown, clutching her twin daughters’ hands so tightly her knuckles turned stark white. She looked dead into the eyes of the man who had completely shattered her heart and abandoned her six years ago.

Lorenzo had been the love of her life. They were supposed to get married. But the night before their wedding, he had vanished completely, choosing his violent criminal empire and a strategic alliance over a quiet life with her. He never knew she was pregnant.

"Mr. Moretti," Emma replied coldly, her voice echoing perfectly in the silent ballroom, enforcing a massive, formal distance between them.

Lorenzo’s strong jaw clenched. The formal title hit him like a physical blow to the chest.

Standing exactly one step behind Lorenzo was Victoria. She was a stunning, thirty-something woman wearing a dark red dress, her blonde hair perfectly styled. She was Lorenzo’s long-time mistress and the ruthless daughter of a rival cartel boss.

Victoria sneered at Emma, assuming the single mother was just a pathetic, obsessed ex-girlfriend looking for a handout at a charity gala.

But Lorenzo didn't look at his mistress. He wasn't even looking at Emma anymore.
