Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Evidence

Claire released Adrian’s silk sleeve. With shaking hands, she reached deep into the pocket of her black maid uniform.
She pulled out a tiny, clear glass vial with a black rubber stopper. She placed it gently onto the cold marble floor between them.
"She brought this into the study," Claire explained, her voice barely a breath. "Marcus told her to put exactly three drops into your morning espresso every day this week. He said it was a concentrated, untraceable cardiac paralytic. It builds up in your system. By Friday, your heart will just stop, and the medical examiner will rule it a natural stress-induced heart attack."
Adrian stared at the small glass vial.
The pieces of the horrific puzzle violently snapped together in his brilliant mind. For the last three days, Adrian had been experiencing severe, unexplainable chest tightness, dizziness, and intense fatigue. He had blamed it on the stress of running the syndicate and planning a massive high-society wedding.
Victoria wasn't just planning his murder. She was actively executing it, smiling in his face while she fed him lethal poison.
And Marcus, the man sworn to protect his life, was stalking a young mother to silence the only witness.
"When they left the study, Victoria accidentally dropped the spare vial on the rug," Claire wept. "I took it. Marcus realized it was missing yesterday. That's why he's hunting me. If he finds me, he'll kill my son."
Adrian didn't yell. A quick, violent outburst was far too generous for the monsters sleeping under his roof.
He slowly reached out and picked up the glass vial. He looked at Claire, the exhausted, barefoot woman who had risked her entire life to protect a boss she barely knew.
