Chapter 1 - The Airport Ghost

The busy terminal of Chicago O'Hare International Airport was a chaotic blur of rushing travelers and rolling luggage. Through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the soft, golden light of the sunset illuminated the highly polished floors.
Amidst the rushing crowd, a tiny four-year-old girl was running just a little too fast.
She wore a delicate pink floral dress and pink shoes, a matching pink bow tied in her soft brown hair. She clutched a small white stuffed rabbit to her chest. Suddenly, the toe of her pink shoe caught on the edge of the tile. She stumbled forward, bracing for a painful impact.
She never hit the ground.
Vincent, a fiercely handsome man in his late thirties, moved with explosive, blinding speed. Wearing a tailored black suit and a crisp black dress shirt, he dropped to one knee, effortlessly catching the little girl in his heavily tattooed hands. He was the most feared syndicate boss in Chicago, a man who never showed mercy.
But as he held the child, his voice was surprisingly soft. "Careful, sweetheart."
Vincent looked down at the little girl's face to make sure she wasn't crying.
He froze completely.
The air in the crowded terminal seemed to evaporate. The little girl was staring back at him with pure, innocent curiosity. But she had his eyes. The exact, distinct, piercing dark eyes that had defined his bloodline for generations.
"Lily!"
A panicked, breathless voice shattered the moment.
Claire sprinted through the crowd. She was a beautiful woman in her thirties, her long wavy brown hair flying wildly behind her. She wore a heavy beige wool coat over a silk champagne dress, desperately dragging a black rolling suitcase.
