Chapter 6 - The Forged Evidence

Vincent stared at Claire, utterly paralyzed.

"What did the recording say?" Vincent asked, his voice a low, lethal rumble.

Claire squeezed her eyes shut, reciting the words that had haunted her nightmares for half a decade.

"You said: 'Get rid of it. I don't want that mistake in my house. Handle it quietly before the end of the week, or I will kill it myself.'"

Vincent’s chest heaved. The cinematic realization crashed over his hardened exterior. The sickening, undeniable truth finally snapped into focus.

"Claire," Vincent choked out, his dark eyes filling with tears of pure, unadulterated devastation. "I didn't say that about a baby. Five years ago... we found a wiretap in the estate's library. A rival spy had planted it."

Claire opened her eyes, staring at him in confusion.

"I was talking about the wiretap," Vincent explained, his voice shaking with absolute rage. "I ordered my men to get rid of the device. Victoria spliced the audio. She cut the recording to make it sound like I was talking about our child."

Claire’s mouth fell open. The heavy, agonizing terror she had carried for five years suddenly began to crack.

"She told me that if I didn't vanish, your men would hunt me down and execute me in the streets," Claire wept, her hands covering her face. "I slept in homeless shelters, Vincent. I scrubbed floors. I gave up everything to protect her from you."

Vincent didn't try to hug her. He didn't demand her forgiveness. He simply looked at the woman he loved, realizing she had endured absolute hell because of a monster he had invited into their home.
