Chapter 4 - The VIP Interrogation

The private aviation lounge at the edge of O'Hare was dead silent. The heavy soundproof doors sealed them inside, completely cutting off the noise of the commercial airport.
Claire sat rigidly on a plush leather sofa. Little Lily sat beside her, happily coloring in a book, completely unaware of the terrifying, life-or-death tension in the room.
Vincent paced across the expensive carpet. He had taken off his suit jacket, his unbuttoned black dress shirt exposing the dark ink sprawling across his muscular chest. He couldn't stop looking at Lily. He was a father. The realization was still crashing over him in massive, overwhelming waves.
He finally stopped pacing and turned to face his runaway wife.
"I spent five years mourning you, Claire," Vincent said, his voice vibrating with suppressed agony. "I thought a rival cartel kidnapped you. I thought you were dead in a ditch. And you were just... hiding? Why?"
Claire glared at him, her fear suddenly morphing into a fierce, maternal rage.
"Don't play the grieving husband with me, Vincent," Claire spat, her hands shaking as she clutched the fabric of her champagne silk dress. "I didn't run away for fun. I ran away because it was the only way to keep my baby breathing."
Vincent’s sharp brow furrowed in absolute confusion. "Keep her breathing? From who?"
"From you!" Claire shouted, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "You told me you never wanted children! You said a baby would make you weak! And when she found out I was pregnant, she played the tape for me!"
Vincent’s blood turned to freezing ice.
"Who is 'she'?" Vincent demanded, stepping closer.
