Chapter 5 - The Bitter Truth

Grace slowly pushed herself up from the floor, using the edge of the housekeeping cart for balance. She leaned heavily on the cart, her back aching from the endless, grueling labor.
She looked at Ethan, then at the two massive armed guards who had just rounded the corner, freezing in shock as they saw their boss kneeling before a maid.
Grace took a small, cautious step forward. She got close enough so that only Ethan could hear her, her brown eyes welling up with thick, heavy, unshed tears that she fought desperately to hold back.
"I didn't disappear, Ethan," Grace whispered, her voice shaky but laced with an undeniable, tragic truth. "I left."
Ethan’s chest heaved. "Left? Why? I gave you everything! I built an empire for you! We were happy!"
"You built an empire on blood," Grace choked out, a single tear spilling over her eyelashes. "But I accepted that. I accepted you. What I couldn't accept was the fact that I was being hunted inside my own home."
Ethan’s dark eyes widened. "Hunted? By who? I had ten men guarding the estate 24/7! No one could touch you!"
