Chapter 6 - The Mother's Treason

A tight close-up on Grace's face captured the profound, devastating agony she had carried for six months.
"I was pregnant," Grace said, her voice dropping to a deadly, quiet whisper that chilled Ethan to the bone. "And your mother knew."
Ethan completely froze. The air in his lungs evaporated.
"Your mother didn't want a 'commoner' giving birth to the heir of the Moretti syndicate," Grace continued, tears finally streaming freely down her face. "Six months ago, she came into my bedroom while you were in New York. She handed me a plane ticket and a bottle of pills. She told me I had two choices: I could swallow the pills and lose the baby, or her personal enforcer would snap my neck and throw my body in the lake."
Ethan couldn't breathe. His heart slammed violently against his ribs. His mother, the sweet, elegant matriarch he had worshipped, had orchestrated the murder of his child.
"She took my phone," Grace sobbed softly. "She blocked my accounts. She had her guards escort me to a bus station in the middle of the night. She told me if I ever tried to contact you, she would kill the baby the second it was born."
