Chapter 1 - The Painful Christmas Dinner

The grand dining room of the luxury estate was bathed in warm, golden lighting. Glowing Christmas trees sparkled in the corners, casting a festive, expensive hue over the long mahogany table set for a perfect holiday feast.

But there was nothing joyful happening at the table.

Sophia, a tiny five-year-old girl, stood rigidly beside her heavy dining chair. She was wearing a beautiful red velvet Christmas dress and crisp white tights, her small hands clutching a worn white stuffed rabbit tightly to her chest. She looked incredibly hesitant, her small face pale and tense.

Sitting directly across from her was her mother, Elisa. Early thirties, flawlessly elegant, wearing designer pearls and a sharp expression.

“Sit down,” Elisa commanded, her voice cold and annoyed.

Sophia didn't move. She hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter, tears welling in her bright eyes.

“It hurts, Mommy,” Sophia whispered, her tiny voice cracking with genuine physical pain.

At the head of the table stood Sophia’s father, Marcus. He was a distinguished man in his late thirties, wearing a dark, expensive suit and a silk tie. He didn't even look up at his daughter. He just calmly continued slicing the massive holiday roast with a silver carving knife.

“Not this again,” Marcus muttered, his tone entirely dismissive. “Stop complaining and listen to your mother, Sophia. You’re ruining dinner.”

Sophia squeezed her eyes shut, a single tear spilling over her lashes. She knew her parents wouldn't listen. They never did.
