Chapter 3 - The Falling Lie

Michael slowly stood up. The warmth of the Christmas lights seemed to completely vanish from the room, replaced by a cold, lethal tension.
He looked directly at Elisa, who was casually sipping her red wine.
"She has a fractured rib, Elisa," Michael said, his voice deadly calm, stripped of all holiday cheer.
Marcus stopped carving the roast. Elisa lowered her wine glass, her elegant face twisting into an immediate, defensive scowl.
"Oh, for heaven's sake, Michael, don't encourage her dramatic behavior," Elisa sighed, rolling her eyes. "She fell off her bicycle three days ago in the driveway. The doctor said it's just a severe bruise. She's fine."
"A severe bruise doesn't feel like a displaced bone," Michael countered sharply. "Did you actually take her to the emergency room for an X-ray?"
Marcus slammed the heavy silver carving knife onto the table.
"We took her to our private pediatrician, Michael," Marcus snapped, his authoritative voice echoing in the dining room. "He cleared her. It was a simple fall. Now sit down and stop interrogating my wife before I ask you to leave."
Michael stared at his brother. Marcus was a powerful corporate lawyer. Elisa was a wealthy socialite. They cared more about keeping up appearances than they did about their own daughter’s health.
Michael looked back down at Sophia. She was trembling, holding the white stuffed rabbit over her injured ribs as if the toy could protect her.
"Sophia," Michael asked gently. "Did you fall off your bike?"
Sophia looked at her mother. Elisa glared back with venomous, silent warning.
